Overview
MyPath is designed around a continuous, data-driven instructional cycle that empowers teachers and personalizes the student journey. The platform operates through five integrated stages – assign, adapt, analyze, act, and assess.
Challenge
The objective was to evolve a mature, data-heavy platform constrained by legacy code. The primary friction point was educator inefficiency; users were ‘drowning in clicks’ and lacked a quick, at-a-glance view of student learning paths. Furthermore, the new brand identity needed to be seamlessly integrated into the legacy UI.
- The central challenge was adapting modern user interface patterns to work seamlessly atop rigid legacy code constraints.
- Educators had zero visibility into a student’s “overall path” without clicking through multiple nested pages.
- Adapt a new, high-level corporate brand identity into a functional, accessible UI skin.
- The existing iconography was vague; custom visuals where needed to communicate complex educational status clearly.
- Ensuring design integrity during implementation required bridging a significant gap between the design vision and engineering realities.
Solution
- Held deep-dive discovery sessions with Product Management to define the scope and identify the highest-friction educator workflows.
- Introduced a sliding panel component, giving teachers instant visibility into student progress without needing to leave their current task context.
- Audited existing user journeys and ruthlessly removed unnecessary steps to simplify daily tasks.
- Conducted theme explorations to skin the UI with the new brand and created a custom iconography library optimized for clarity.
- Created comprehensive design specs and documentation to guide engineers through the complex implementation of modern styles on legacy code.
Impact
By navigating complex technical constraints, the platform’s overall look and feel was successfully modernized. A key driver of this success was the introduction of a new sliding panel feature, which drastically improved “time-to-insight” for educators using the system. To ensure the longevity and scalability of these improvements, a comprehensive design system and documentation standard was established, which significantly streamlined ongoing collaboration with the engineering team.
